Arch+ Competition
ROK wins the competition Simple Systems - Complex Capacities
The architectural office ROK led by partners Matthias Rippmann, Silvan Oesterle and Michael Knauss wins the Arch+ competition "Simple Systems - Complex Capacities" with their project "Flat2Form". From a total of 115 entries three projects were selected for an award. The competition accompanied the publication of the Arch+ volume "Form follows Performance" guest edited by Achim Menges and Michael Hensel. We will post more information on our website soon.
From the competition brief: In addition to volume 188 ARCH+ launches the competition “Simple Systems – Complex Capacities” with a total prize money of 20.000 Euro. The aim of the competition is to foster a broader discussion of the introduced concepts, and, moreover, the editors and authors hope for an experimental development of the concepts. Materials can display varied characteristics without change to their chemical makeup. The difference then emanates from its structure. Nature demonstrates masterfully how one and the same material can be structured differently due to changing conditions and requirements. The performance of natural systems is based on such structural differentiation. The key question of the competition is therefore how the immense potential of material structural differentiation can be instrumentalised for architecture and the built environment. The task is to rethink architecture as a systemic exchange and feedback between form, material, structure, its production (fabrication and assembly) and its effects (performance).
